How Often Should You Restring Your Badminton Racket?

· OGKILS PH

Most players only restring when the string snaps. But by then, you've probably been playing with dead strings for weeks. Strings lose tension over time, and that means less control, less power, and a less satisfying pok on every hit.

The simple rule

A good guide: restring as many times a year as you play per week.

  • Play once a week? Restring about once a year.
  • Play 3 times a week? Restring every 3 to 4 months.
  • Play daily or competitively? Restring every 1 to 2 months.

Signs your strings need replacing

  • The shuttle feels like it's "sinking" into the strings with less control.
  • The sound of your smash is dull instead of crisp.
  • Strings are frayed, fuzzy, or keep shifting out of place.
  • You haven't restrung in over a year (strings lose tension even when not in use).

Choosing the right tension

  • 18–22 lbs (low): Bigger sweet spot and more power. Great for beginners and casual players.
  • 23–26 lbs (medium): Balanced power and control. Ideal for intermediate players.
  • 27+ lbs (high): Maximum control and precision for advanced players with fast swings. Less forgiving on off-center hits.

Always check your racket's maximum recommended tension, usually printed on the shaft or frame. Going over it can crack the frame.

Tips to make your strings last

  • Keep your racket in a thermal bag. Heat and humidity (hello, Philippine summers!) loosen strings faster.
  • Never leave your racket inside a hot car.
  • Avoid clashing rackets with your doubles partner.
  • Replace worn grommets when you restring to protect the strings from sharp edges.
