5 Footwork Drills to Move Faster on the Court
· OGKILS PH
Ask any coach what separates good players from great ones and they'll tell you the same thing: footwork. A powerful smash means nothing if you can't get to the shuttle in time. The good news? You can train it anywhere. Here are five drills to get you moving faster.
1. Shadow footwork (6-corner drill)
Stand at the center of the court. Without a shuttle, move to each of the six corners (two front, two mid, two back), mimic a stroke, and return to center each time. Do 3 sets of 1 minute with 30 seconds rest.
Why it works: It builds the muscle memory for moving to and recovering from every part of the court.
2. Split-step reaction drill
Have a partner stand in front of you and point in random directions. Do a small hop (split step) just as they point, then push off in that direction. Do 3 sets of 20 reps.
Why it works: The split step is the secret to a fast first step. Pros do it before every opponent shot.
3. Ladder drills
Use an agility ladder (or tape lines on the floor). Run through quick steps, in-and-outs, and side shuffles. Do 4 to 5 runs of each pattern.
Why it works: Builds quick, light feet and coordination.
4. Lunge-and-recover
From the center, lunge forward to the net with your racket leg, touch the floor or a cone, then push back to center. Alternate front-left and front-right. Do 3 sets of 10 per side.
Why it works: Strengthens your legs for deep net lunges and trains a quick recovery.
5. Skipping rope
Simple but effective. Do 3 rounds of 2 minutes, mixing regular jumps, single-leg hops, and double-unders.
Why it works: Improves calf strength, rhythm, and stamina for long rallies.
Gear tip
Footwork drills put a lot of stress on your ankles and knees. Always wear proper badminton shoes with good grip and cushioning. Running shoes don't give the lateral support you need for quick side-to-side movement.
